Best Shrubs for your Louisville Landscape

Sky Pencil Holly

Often an overlooked piece of landscaping, and not the first thing that comes to mind when you determine what to install next, are shrubs. They provide invaluable privacy to your landscape, and can even become a sort of natural fence for your property. Like trees, shrubs also enhance the quality of the air, and improve the stability of your soil. They can also be functional, providing shade, and structure to your landscape. Additionally, they take up space in your yard that would otherwise need to be mowed or maintained more heavily. Shrubs are also an incredible amenity for all of these reasons and are viewed as extremely luxurious. This increases the value and curb appeal of your property, which is never a negative. We carry many different types of shrubs at Nature’s Mulch, and we are here to give you the best shrubs for your Louisville Landscape.

China Girl Holly

If you are looking for a large evergreen shrub to accent your property and give it shape, this may be the proper choice. A great shrub for the foundation of your property, it produces red berries and can grow from 7 to 10 feet in height. Very low maintenance, it can grow in the full sun, as well as with some shade. Additionally, it will stay green all year round, giving you the privacy you need through every season. Check it out right here on Nature’s Mulch website.

Andorra Compacta Juniper

Another evergreen grows with an entirely different purpose than a taller shrub. At its mature height, it will only be 1 to 2 feet tall and serves as great ground cover. Very green in color, it can also begin to show a tint of purple through the winter. It does well in the full sun and takes on the stereotypical look of a needled evergreen tree. With that being said, it does not flower, and will not be a highlight of your landscape, but rather a consistent filler that looks good all year round.

Knock Out Rose

Going for more of a pop of color with this selection, Knock Out Rose is the #1 brand of roses for landscaping. They can be found in up to 11 different colors, and grow to a height of 3 to 4 feet at maturity. Great for use as a hedge, they bloom from May to the first frost and give you great color until then. They also do best in full sun and attract butterflies, both great qualities for a Louisville landscape. While they do require a little more maintenance, such as mulching, and pruning, they are well worth the effort with their electric color. Find these in a few different colors at Nature’s Mulch, right here.

Fernleaf Buckthorn

Our last choice for this list is of a different shape than all of the others. This shrub grows upright, to a height of 6 or 7 feet, and remains only 2 or 3 feet wide. It is great for lining your landscape or property and adds color in the fall as the green becomes a lovely yellow. They require no pruning and bloom no flowers. We wrote a previous blog on landscaping in small spaces, where we discussed taking advantage of vertical space. This shrub is a great example of doing just that, as it grows straight up, leaving ground space available for your creative design. Give it a look on our website, right here.
