Commonly Used Names for De-Icers

Sodium Chloride or Rock Salt (NaCl)
Inexpensive, readily available, extremely corrosive.

Magnesium Chloride (MgCl2)
Higher cost, reduces melting temperature, may have a corrosion inhibitor additive.

Calcium Chloride (CaCl2)
Flakes, pellets, or liquid. Powerful de-icer but very corrosive and expensive. May have a corrosion inhibitor additive.

Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA)
Usually supplied as a powder, crystal, pellet, or liquid. Non-corrosive and biodegradable. Expensive, but useful for areas where chlorides need to be limited.

Beet Juice (Ice Bite)
Liquid. Can be an additive to rock salt or brines. Primarily used to deliver residual effects. Lowers the working temperature of the product mix and acts as a corrosion inhibitor. Environmentally friendly. It is not slippery and does not stain.
